Senate Suspends Move To Make JAMB Result Valid For 3 Years

The Senate has Suspends its Move To Make the Joint Adminstration and Matriculations, JAMB, Result Valid For 3 Years.

Senate Suspends Move To Make JAMB Result Valid For 3 Years

Report has emerged that the Senate has suspended the move to amend the Act establishing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

With this development, the extension of JAMB result validity has also been put on hold.

This was disclosed by the spokesperson of the board, Dr. Fabian Benjamin.

According to him, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, Aliyu Wamakko, represented by Senator Ajayi Boroffice, announced this during an oversight visit to its Headquarters.

It was learnt that the Senate has suspended the idea to allow for adequate consultation with experts and to ensure that the progress being made by JAMB in the conduct of examination is not impeded.

“Your JAMB result is only valid for one year and we thought it would be better for it to be valid for at least three years. That would reduce the burden on the parents, students and even the institution that is conducting the test. I think it is good for all of us and would not be rejected by the public.

“We don’t make laws for an individual or for the Senate. But we make laws for the country in the interest of all of us. A bill must not necessarily be at the convenience of a particular organization. Since we don’t want to make a law that would impede the progress of any institution, we are bound to listen to what the stakeholders are saying.” Wamakko stated

Reacting to this, the Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, commended the Senate for listening to his appeal and called on the House of Representatives and the Executive to equally do the same by suspending the amendment of the JAMB Act.

Wike promises to invest more in Education

The Rivers Government has promised to invest more in the educational sector, and says it is the fastest way to empower the youths of a state.

Wike promises to invest more in Education

The promise was announced in a statement by Mr Simon Nwankanu, the Special Assistant to
Gov. Nysome Wike of Rivers on Sunday.

Nwankanu stated that Gov. Wike made the promise on Saturday at the 33rd and 34th combined convocation of the Ignatius Ajuri University of Education, Port Harcourt, represented by the Rivers Education Commissioner, Prof. Kaniye Ebeku.

The governor also said that the state government would increase funding in the next fiscal year to enable the University to overcome some of its critical challenges in infrastructure, staff development and students’ welfare.

Wike added that “the state government alone cannot meet the funding needs of its tertiary institutions; we, therefore, expect the university to explore alternative sources of funding to augment the funding gaps.

“This is because investment in the education sector has led to sustained improvement in learning and infrastructure across the state.”

Wike commended the management of the university for working to secure accreditation of its courses and improving critical infrastructure.

The governor said “besides achieving full accreditation for all programmes of the university with National Universities Commission, the present management had ensured industrial harmony and delivered key infrastructure projects among several other achievements.

“We are quite happy with the developmental strides and ongoing improvements in the university. The management has lived up to the expectations of stakeholders, including the staff and students.”

He urged the fresh graduates to put the knowledge gained in the course of their academic pursuit to good use.

“Remember that things usually have a way of working out for those who strive. You must take your destiny in your hands and become the architects of your future by finding your ways into viable ventures and career paths in the public and private spheres or in self-employment”, he advised.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Joseph Kinanee, commended the governor for the increased funding to the university which he said had led to the development of required educational infrastructure.

He said that those infrastructure helped the university in getting full accreditation for all its academic programmes.

A total of 3,334 graduands received various degrees, diplomas and certificates at the combined convocation.

NUC Scraps Degree Diploma Programmes in Universities

National Universities Commission, NUC have scrapped and removed sub-degree diploma programmes in the Nigerian University System.

NUC Scraps Degree Diploma Programmes in Universities

The National Universities commission (NUC) on Tuesday, says universities in the country would soon put a stop to diploma programmes run at the undergraduate level

Executive Secretary, NUC, Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed said that the decision scrapping the sub-degree diploma was reached during a meeting in Abuja with Vice Chancellors of federal, state and private universities in the country last Wednesday.

Mr. Adamu said universities currently running the programmes have been directed to begin to wind down immediately.

He said: ‘’Running sub-degree diplomas was not the business of Universities, but that of Polytechnics, more so when the Federal Government, as far back as November, 2001, had issued a circular stating that such diplomas could not be used for employment or promotion purposes in the Public Service.’’

Rather than stretch their facilities to run sub-degree programmes, the universites, he said, should direct their energies towards their primary function of producing high level manpower for the economy, by strenthening their part-time programmes, in addition to offering high quality undergraduate degrees as well as postgraduate diplomas and degrees.’’

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Dr Kazaure, dispelled the rumours that the federal government had converted the Kaduna Polytechnic and Yaba College of Technology to City University.
